SAFARI ITINERARY
Your journey begins with a drive to Rongai Gate near the Kenya border, followed by registration and briefing. The trek starts through peaceful farmland and pine forest, offering a calm and less crowded introduction to Kilimanjaro.
You gradually ascend to Simba Camp, located on the edge of the moorland zone, where you enjoy dinner and overnight stay.
Altitude: 1,950 m – 2,600 m
Hiking distance: 8–9 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Today’s hike continues through heath and moorland terrain with stunning views of the mountain. The trail passes Kikelewa Tarn before ascending toward the dramatic Mawenzi region.
Vegetation becomes sparse as you gain altitude, and the landscape becomes more rugged and alpine. You arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Altitude: 2,600 m – 4,330 m
Hiking distance: ~10–12 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
You cross into the alpine desert zone, where the environment becomes cold, dry, and rocky. The trail is open with wide volcanic landscapes and strong winds at times.
You reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you rest early, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. This is a crucial rest period before the most challenging part of the climb.
Altitude: 4,330 m – 4,700 m
Hiking distance: 9–10 km
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Your summit journey begins at midnight. You ascend slowly and carefully through steep volcanic scree toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa on Mount Kilimanjaro.
After reaching the summit and enjoying sunrise above the clouds, you descend back to Kibo Hut for short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight recovery.
Altitude: 4,700 m – 5,895 m – 3,720 m
Hiking distance: 22 km
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through moorland and lush rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. The trail is easier and allows you to reflect on your achievement while enjoying the scenery.
At the gate, you receive your summit certificate before transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.
Altitude: 3,720 m – 1,870 m
Hiking distance: 20 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
