TRIP OVERVIEW
The 6-Day Marangu Route climb on Mount Kilimanjaro is a well-paced and comfortable trekking adventure designed for better acclimatization and higher summit success. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the only Kilimanjaro route offering hut accommodation, making it ideal for beginners and climbers who prefer comfort and structure.
SAFARI ITINERARY
Begin your journey with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate for registration and briefing. The trail enters a lush rainforest filled with tall trees, birds, and monkeys. The path is wide and scenic, offering a gentle introduction to Kilimanjaro trekking before arriving at Mandara Hut.
Altitude: 1,870 m – 2,700 m
Hiking distance: ~8 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
The route continues through rainforest before transitioning into the moorland zone. Vegetation becomes shorter, and views of Kilimanjaro’s slopes open up. This is an important acclimatization stage as you gain altitude gradually. You arrive at Horombo Hut for rest and overnight stay.
Altitude: 2,700 m – 3,720 m
Hiking distance: ~12 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
This day is dedicated to acclimatization, helping your body adjust to higher altitude on Mount Kilimanjaro. You may take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or nearby viewpoints before returning to Horombo Hut. This improves summit success and reduces altitude sickness risks.
Altitude: 3,720 m
The trail enters the alpine desert zone, where the landscape becomes dry, rocky, and cold. Vegetation is minimal, and conditions become more challenging as you approach higher altitude. You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon to rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Altitude: 3,720 m – 4,700 m
Hiking distance: ~10 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Your summit climb begins at midnight, ascending slowly through steep volcanic terrain toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa on Mount Kilimanjaro. After reaching the summit and enjoying sunrise views, you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.
Altitude: 4,700 m – 5,895 m – 3,720 m
Hiking distance: ~22 km
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The trail is easier and scenic, allowing you to reflect on your achievement. At the gate, you receive your summit certificate before transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.
Altitude: 3,720 m – 1,870 m
Hiking distance: ~20 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
