TRIP OVERVIEW
The 9-Day Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is the best and most successful trekking route to Uhuru Peak. It is designed for maximum acclimatization, meaning your body gets more time to adjust to altitude, greatly increasing summit success rates. Starting from the remote western side, it offers a quiet, scenic, and less crowded wilderness experience.
This route is highly recommended for climbers who want a safe, comfortable, and well-paced climb. It passes through all major ecological zones, rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zone, while giving enough rest days and gradual altitude gain to reduce altitude sickness risk.
SAFARI ITINERARY
Your journey begins at Londorossi Gate with registration and briefing. You hike through dense rainforest filled with wildlife, birds, and giant trees. This gentle start helps your body begin acclimatizing. Overnight at Forest Camp.
Altitude: 2,100 m – 2,650 m
Hiking distance: ~6–8 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
You leave the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The landscape opens with volcanic formations and wide views of Kilimanjaro. The slow pace helps improve acclimatization as you reach Shira Camp I.
Altitude: 2,650 m – 3,610 m
Hiking distance: 8–10 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
This is a relaxed acclimatization day across the Shira Plateau. You walk through open landscapes while your body adjusts to higher altitude. Overnight at Shira Camp II.
Altitude: 3,610 m – 3,850 m
Hiking distance: 7–8 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
You ascend to Lava Tower for high-altitude acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is key for summit success on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Altitude: 3,850 m – 4,600 m – 3,960 m
Hiking distance: ~10–12 km
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
The day starts with the exciting Barranco Wall climb. After reaching the top, you continue through valleys to Karanga Camp. This short day helps recovery and prepares you for higher altitude.
Altitude: 3,960 m – 4,035 m
Hiking distance: 5–6 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
You trek to Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit. The air becomes thinner and colder. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Altitude: 4,035 m – 4,673 m
Hiking distance: 4–5 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
This extra acclimatization night improves summit success. You move slightly higher to Kosovo Camp, reducing distance for summit night and helping your body adjust better.
Altitude: 4,673 m – 4,900 m
Hiking distance: 1–2 km
Hiking time: 1–2 hours
Your summit climb begins at midnight. You ascend slowly through volcanic scree to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa on Mount Kilimanjaro. After celebrating sunrise at the summit, you descend to Barafu for rest and continue to Mweka Camp.
Altitude: 4,673 m – 5,895 m – 3,100 m
Hiking distance: 17–21 km
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through rainforest back to Mweka Gate. You receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.
Altitude: 3,100 m – 1,640 m
Hiking distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
