TRIP OVERVIEW
The 6-Day Umbwe Route climb on Mount Kilimanjaro is the steepest and most direct path to Uhuru Peak, designed for strong and experienced climbers seeking a challenging, adventurous, and less crowded trekking experience.
This route is physically demanding due to its rapid altitude gain and limited acclimatization time, but it rewards climbers with dramatic scenery, true wilderness trekking, and a powerful sense of achievement at the summit of Africa’s highest mountain.
SAFARI ITINERARY
Your journey begins at Umbwe Gate with registration and briefing. The trail immediately enters dense rainforest with steep and narrow paths. Expect a tough but beautiful climb through thick vegetation, tall trees, and hanging moss before reaching Umbwe Cave Camp for overnight stay.
Altitude: 1,600 m – 2,850 m
Hiking distance: ~10–11 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours
The trail becomes steeper as you leave the forest and enter heath and rocky terrain. You quickly gain altitude and join the southern circuit route. The day ends at Barranco Camp, located below the famous Barranco Wall, offering stunning mountain views.
Altitude: 2,850 m – 3,960 m
Hiking distance: 6–8 km
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
You start with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a steep but non-technical section requiring light scrambling. After reaching the top, you continue through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. This is an important acclimatization stop before the final ascent.
Altitude: 3,960 m – 4,035 m
Hiking distance: 5–6 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
You trek to Barafu Camp, your final base before summit night. The terrain becomes colder and more exposed, and the altitude is strongly felt. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Altitude: 4,035 m – 4,673 m
Hiking distance: 4–5 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Your summit climb begins at midnight. You ascend slowly through steep volcanic scree toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa on Mount Kilimanjaro. Reaching the summit is a life-changing achievement.
After celebrating sunrise at the top, you descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight stay.
Altitude: 4,673 m – 5,895 m – 3,100 m
Hiking distance: 17–21 km
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest back to Mweka Gate. The trail is easier, allowing time to reflect on your achievement. At the gate, you receive your summit certificate before transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.
Altitude: 3,100 m – 1,640 m
Hiking distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
