5.0 Superb

Tour Type

Umbwe Route

Climbers taking photos at Stella Point on Mount Kilimanjaro, celebrating their achievement near the summit during a trekking expedition in Tanzania.

TRIP OVERVIEW

The 7-Day Umbwe Route climb on Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most adventurous and scenic trekking experiences to Uhuru Peak. It is a steep, direct, and less crowded route, designed for strong climbers who want a true wilderness challenge with a higher chance of acclimatization compared to shorter Umbwe itineraries.

This extended 7-day version improves safety and summit success by adding extra acclimatization time while still keeping the adventure feel of the Umbwe Route. It combines dense rainforest, dramatic ridges, alpine desert, and glacier summit views for a complete Kilimanjaro experience.

SAFARI ITINERARY

Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Your adventure begins at Umbwe Gate with registration and briefing. The trail immediately enters dense tropical rainforest with steep, narrow paths. Expect a challenging climb through lush vegetation, tall trees, and rich wildlife sounds before reaching Umbwe Cave Camp for overnight stay.

Altitude: 1,600 m – 2,850 m
Hiking distance: 10–11 km
Hiking time: 5–7 hours

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp

The trail becomes steeper as you leave the forest and enter heath and rocky terrain. You join the southern circuit and are rewarded with wide mountain views. You arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, located beneath the famous Barranco Wall.

Altitude: 2,850 m – 3,960 m
Hiking distance: 6–8 km
Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day starts with the exciting Barranco Wall climb, a steep but non-technical section that offers amazing views at the top. Afterward, you continue through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. This is an important acclimatization stop.

Altitude: 3,960 m – 4,035 m
Hiking distance: 5–6 km
Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

You trek to Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit. The environment becomes cold and exposed as altitude increases. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Altitude: 4,035 m – 4,673 m
Hiking distance: 4–5 km
Hiking time: 3–4 hours

Day 5: Acclimatization Day

Altitude: 4,673 m – 4,900 m

This extra day is very important for increasing summit success. You may do a short acclimatization hike around Barafu or Kosovo Camp, helping your body adjust to high altitude before the final push. Rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally for summit night.

Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Your summit climb begins at midnight. You ascend slowly through volcanic scree toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa on Mount Kilimanjaro. Reaching the summit is a powerful and unforgettable achievement.

After sunrise at the top, you descend to Barafu Camp for rest and continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight stay.

Altitude: 4,673 m – 5,895 m – 3,100 m
Hiking distance: 17–21 km
Hiking time: 12–15 hours

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

The final descent takes you through lush rainforest back to Mweka Gate. The trail is easier, giving time to reflect on your achievement. At the gate, you receive your summit certificate before transfer back to Arusha or Moshi.

Altitude: 3,100 m – 1,640 m
Hiking distance: 10 km
Hiking time: 3–5 hours
